Potentially shopping for a new host

Surpass Hosting has been great, but I’m considering a host change. I honestly haven’t been using my domains as much in the past few years as I used to, but I’m not exactly looking to delete everything and step down from website building; I’m just looking for something a bit more affordable.

My base package with Surpass is $60/year. Each domain registration with Go Daddy is about $8, so that’s an additional $24 for the three domains. The total is therefore about $84/year or $7 per month, given a few cents or so depending on what coupon codes Go Daddy have available at the time. That’s not bad, but I know that there are some savings to be had. If I could knock the price down $10, I would be happy; more, and I would be enthralled. I know I could save about $8 by taking advantage of the “one free domain with web hosting registration” that many hosts offer, which is great, but I am mainly looking to reduce my package price.

With that said, could anyone with prior/current domain experience recommend some quality, affordable web hosts to me? I’ve been browsing for hosts, but I would certainly appreciate direct feedback- especially when it comes to something like evaluating up time and customer service, which I have found that hosts have lied about in the past. Thanks in advance.

R.I.P.

We lost some beloved entertainment icons this week. :frown:

Ed McMahon…

Farrah Fawcett…

…now Michael Jackson, the fucking “King of Pop”!

A journalism major friend of mine commented how there are more “important” news stories to have been following up on than Michael’s status, and asked if people were interested in “real” news… but come on! Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, beloved by many regardless of what kind of reputation he’s had over the years, with such an incredible career in the music industry and a huge fanbase… that’s certainly notable news for the entertainment industry!!

To me, the most unfortunate part about Michael Jackson’s passing is that in the eyes of some people, he will be remembered as a “weirdo” and a “pedophile.” I’m tired of hearing about that, to be honest. Lest we forget that Michael was found to be not guilty in the 2005 trail that could have sent him to jail for 20 years if he was found guilty of the charges brought up against him. Instead of focusing on the bullshit… what about his contributions to the music industry? The number one songs, the highest selling albums, the work he did with ex-Beatle Paul McCartney, the fanbase he had…?

While I wasn’t a huge MJ fan, I respected him for his work and his incredible presence in the industry over the years. I think he inspired many great artists we see today, regardless of if he was “weird” or not, and will continue to do so after his passing.

Four Foods on Friday #81

#1. Clair’s question. What’s the biggest kitchen blunder you’ve made?
Recently, my friend and I were making blueberry cream cheese coffee cake. We made one cake and were puzzled when it didn’t seem to be rising or cooking sufficiently, but it still tasted good when it came out of the oven and cooled. A few hours later, we made another cake. When my friend took the carton of eggs out of the refrigerator, the light bulb lit up in my head and I realized that the other cake probably turned out the way it did because it didn’t have any eggs in it. I forgot to put them in with the wet ingredients that I was in charge of mixing up. Oops.

I used to make fun of my ex for the time he forgot to put eggs in the pumpkin pie we slaved to make for what seemed like an eternity (we hacked apart, boiled, seasoned, and pureed the huge pumpkin that was at one point sitting on my front door step to make the pies… that’s how hardcore we were), but I guess I can’t do that anymore. Now I have my own “forgot the eggs” story.

#2. What’s your favorite snow day beverage?
Peppermint hot chocolate with lots of whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Yum.

#3. What’s your favorite way to eat celery?
It has to be cooked in something, or “hidden” in something if it’s raw (i.e. potato salad.)

#4. What’s the most most unappealing looking food you can think of?
Ugli Ripe tomatoes always remind me of post-apocalyptic, mutated tomatoes which look that way as a result of excessive radiation… but they’re not, and they taste good.

Starbucks Coffee and K-Cups?

“Where are your K-Cups, Starbucks?”

What a great question.

After reading that article, I was inspired to send an email to Starbucks, expressing how much I enjoyed their coffee, but wondered where their line of K-Cups were.

Come to think of it… Dunkin’ Donuts don’t have a line of K-Cups, either. Neither do other well-known coffee companies that have a strong, recognizable presence in the coffee section in supermarkets nationwide. In fact, when I initially looked at the K-Cups offered, I only recognized a few of the companies. I have grown to recognize the companies that I didn’t recognize in the first place based on certain varieties of coffee that that they offer, the taste of their coffee, and their packaging/logos (obviously.) This is fantastic, of course, to let the smaller guys gain some spotlight in the market and not be overshadowed by the giants… but I’m still curious as to why the giants are still sleeping.

Although it might be dirty and even unsafe for me to admit this, especially when I know there are those lurking around who believe that the big corporate machine is going to kill small business… but I still enjoy Starbucks coffee and my parents enjoy Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. I would try K-Cups from both companies, if they made them available. Does that mean brand loyalty would take over and I would only purchase Starbucks or D&D K-Cups? Certainly not.

I have used the My K-Cup adapter with my Keurig Platinum single-cup coffee maker in order to use different kinds of ground coffee that they do not make K-Cups for. The adapter works, but not nearly as well as the specially designed and pre-packaged K-Cups. Through my inquiry to Starbucks, I was thinking out of both curiosity and the potential for more K-Cup brand variety. We’ll see what kind of response I receive from them…

In the meantime, I’ll add a few coffee-related questions with this post, since I’m curious to see what people have to say.

  • How do you feel about large vs. small coffee companies?
  • Do you have a single-cup coffeemaker at home? If so, what brand/model?
  • Do you have a particular brand of coffee that you enjoy?
  • How do you take your coffee?
