The first of, hopefully many, Freebie Fridays! (I bet the title isn’t completely original, but so what.)
Smart phones: who doesn’t love them? Actually, the better question might be, with the increasing number of promotions for smart phones, who doesn’t have them nowadays? They can literally be a life saver, if you ask anyone who has been lost driving around in a strange town. It takes nothing more than a quick Google search to find some Google Maps and bring you to safety – after pulling over to the side of the road, of course. Not that I know from experience or anything…
If you ask anyone, the only thing better than cheap smart phone apps is free smart phone apps. Apple, by far, has the biggest selection of apps for its iPhone, most of which are also compatible with the iPod Touch and the iPad. The last time I checked, they were at over 500,000 apps and almost 25 billion downloads (see the live countdown on the Apple website).
Now, I am one of the unfortunate souls who decided to get another Blackberry on my last phone upgrade. LET’S NOT GO THERE. Please.
Android is better than Blackberry and still behind Apple as far as number of apps is concerned, but they will catch up, since Android phones have the fastest adoption rate out of any smart phones. Android OS also has the advantage of being open source; anyone can create an app for Android using many different types of tools and make it available on any number of Android marketplaces across the internet.
That brings us to the Freebee Friday: free apps for your iPhone and Android smart phones!
For iPhone users…
If you go to Starbucks as often as I do, you might have noticed that Starbucks has been handing out little cards that can be redeemed at the iTunes Store for MP3 downloads. They are usually near the register. Maybe you started ignoring them, expecting stacks of them to be there because they featured weird songs to download – kind of like I did for so many years after the promotion started. It is a good thing I started noticing again because they are not just offering music downloads anymore. Those little download cards at Starbucks now feature books, videos, apps, and music – a different one each week.
For Android users…
Every day – yes, every day – Amazon offers a free paid app for Android from its marketplace. Once you download your freebee, you can also check out the “Big Deal” of the day from Amazon, an app at a deeply discounted price.
I recognize that for some, this might be nothing but a friendly reminder. Others might be saying, You dipshit – this was soooooooooo 3 years ago, to which I would say, I know you are but what am I?. Regardless, I retain hope that there might be 1% of the population, maybe some that just received their first smart phone as a Valentine’s Day or birthday present, who didn’t know this and are glad to have found out about it. Whatever class you fit into, enjoy your free iPhone and Android smart phones… and be lucky you don’t still have a Blackberry while I sit here and be a jealous asshole about it.
