Seeing as how my Facebook feed was bombarded today with “10 year anniversary of 9/11” posts, I might as well jump on the bandwagon and resurrect a post from my Livejournal from 09/11/02. This was the first anniversary of 9/11 when I traveled into New York City to see Ground Zero with my mom. The location was still heavily fenced-off at this time, nothing but a massive hole in the ground where the Twin Towers once stood, and they were just starting to talk about building a memorial but there was some controversy about what to put there and why. On this visit we also saw the Empire State Building, decorated in the colors of our national flag, and the Towers of Light, two brilliant bluish-white lights that represented the fallen Twin Towers. All stood out as symbols of patriotism, illuminated in the New York skyline and visible from miles and miles away. I haven’t been back to that area of New York City since 2002, but I hope to visit sometime soon to see the radical transformation of the now infamous landmark.
